The pond
Creating a pond quickly became an essential part of our small ecosystem.
The location, in the light shade of the birch trees, was chosen based on the aspect and the need to avoid direct sunlight between 12 noon and 4 pm to prevent algae blooms. We sought to apply the principles of phytoremediation to the smallest possible area (5m²) to create a balanced ecosystem, without the need for a filtration system or pump, and by limiting the process of eutrophication. After placing plants with various functions (purification, oxygenation, etc.) in the pond, it was ‘seeded’ with silt from the Erdre. We then witnessed the unfolding of a fascinating aquatic ecosystem.
Our experience has confirmed that it does not encourage the proliferation of mosquitoes, as there are so many predators of the larvae (dragonfly larvae, beetles, etc.). The balance of the water’s parameters is maintained by adding minerals after heavy rainfall and bacteria in the spring. It is replenished by rainwater, with a dedicated 500-litre reservoir. The substantial volume of soil removed prompted a review of the site’s topography and the decision to create terraces, delineated by dry stone walls (an important habitat for biodiversity).
Thanks to its location, the wildlife it supports and its beauty, the pond has become the heart of our garden, providing a priceless haven of coolness in the summer.
